Nicholas was born into a glass-making family. His grandfather was an industrial glassworker for GE in Cleveland. His father, Thomas, an artist, craftsman and teacher, helped build the first glass studio and program for The School for American Craftsman at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Surrounded by hand-made objects and artisans while growing up, he turned to glass himself at 19 and entered the Penland School of Crafts, learning from his father’s friends and fellow glass makers.
He finds glass most beautiful when worked in a way that somehow captures and expresses its fluidity as a material while maximizing the unique relationship of glass with light and color
