Not satisfied with an Honours degree with a double major in History and German Literature, Hilary went on to graduate from a renowned crafts program at Sheridan College outside Toronto, Canada. At present she is a Resident Artist and Ceramics Instructor at the Harbourfront Centre Craft Studios in Toronto.
Hilary's primary interest in her work has always been function. All her work is wheel-thrown in high-fired porcelain. She uses abstract geometrical as well as simplified floral motifs, applied in various ways. Some surfaces are carved and inlaid with glaze, some are carved and inlaid with slip, and on some surfaces she uses shellac as a resist and then wipes it away with a wet sponge. Hilary then uses traditional porcelain glazes such as celadon to emphasize the texture created beneath the glaze.
